Social cognition refers to the behaviours and thought processes which individuals use to interact with others. The study of social cognition encompasses anthropology, linguistics, social neuroscience, and many branches of psychology (e.g. comparative, developmental, social, cognitive and clinical psychology). At present, however, few opportunities exist for researchers across these disciplines to meet and discuss their work. The aim of this workshop is therefore to encourage an interdisciplinary approach to social cognition. We hope to promote conversations between anthropologists, comparative psychologists, developmental psychologists, social neuroscientists, and psychologists working in clinical and applied domains, with the aim to give attendees a chance to reflect on how their work relates to other academic and applied disciplines. There are four broad themes to the workshop, drawing discussants from a wide range of disciplines: “evolution”, relating to comparative research; "development", concerning the emergence of social cognition in children; “mechanisms”, covering experimental psychology and social neuroscience approaches to studying social cognition; and “applications”, exploring how basic research can address developmental and acquired social cognitive difficulties.
The first Social Cognition workshop took place during the summer of 2014 at the University of Surrey. Hosted by Dr. Caroline Catmur through the Institute of Advanced Studies, and sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council, the first workshop was a great success featuring keynote talks by Josep Call (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology), Cecelia Heyes (All Souls College, Oxford), and Marcel Brass (Ghent University). With two lively poster sessions and 12 shorter research talks featuring the work of the 55 doctoral, postdoctoral, and faculty delegates, the two days spent in Surrey were packed with spirited social cognition discussion and debate. We look forward to welcoming you to beautiful North Wales this summer for the second installment of Europe's premier interdisciplinary social cognition meeting!
